In the 1970s, we were experiencing an oil
shortage. To avoid standing in long
gas lines, I stayed close to home, and explored my fascination for things in
Nature. When I snapped a macro lens on my Nikon, I found a most amazing world,
one that most people never see. It was a world that every photographer should
experience, at least once – the intricate center of a flower – the unbelievable
detail of a veined leaf – delicate and lacy ice crystals on a January window.
Imagine observing these details in ordinary things, and then realizing that by
seeing the details, you understand the whole.
Close-up
photography can teach you to be a more careful observer and to develop a
discerning eye. You will see the necessity of balancing your technical
skills and the artist within, to creatively portray this startling and
surreal world.
Our discussion will introduce you to the techniques
and equipment necessary to accomplish this feat. Our overview of
lenses, lighting, backgrounds, magnification, composition and many
creative tips will give you the information you need to peer into this
fascinating microcosm.
As in the 70s, you can combat our current energy
crunch by stepping out into
your back yard, and experiencing what I found 30 years ago – the wonder
of macro photography.
